Can you believe a simple placemat can be used for multiple home decor projects? They are not expensive and they come in beautiful patterns and colors. Let me show you how to repurpose it other than using it as a placemat.
This is a very sturdy tray but the pattern is so busy anything I put on it wasn’t so appealing. So I’ve decided to change the look just by using a piece of placemat..
Can you believe it started out like this?
Cut the placemats to fit the tray.
Use a paper knife to push the edges of the mat into the wooden frame to keep it snug.
If you are using a regular tray without a frame then you can ignore this step completely.
It’s very easy to change the color of the placemat according to the display.
Take a look , how I have used the same tray for multiple purposes.
Display collectibles …..
Create a candle scape …
Create an Indian themed vignette….
And for serving too !
Wait a minute ,There is more !
Sometimes you get bored of using the same thing for a long time, Instead of going and buying a new one, It is very cost effective to change the look by using simple things you have at home. In this case of course a vinyl placemat. I specifically use vinyl because it’s easy to cut , easy to clean and when you cut, the edges don’t fray .
I had this tiny side table for a long time, you can see the top has worn out a little bit .. I wanted to give this a new look with just the things I had at home. Wondering what a vinyl placemat and some thumbtacks can do ? You will be amazed!
- Put the side table upside down on top of the place mat.
- Measured it and cut it to size.
- Place the mat on top of the side table
- Use scotch tape to keep the sides in place
- Nail the thumbtacks on the edges then space the rest every 1/2 inch.
- Repeat this on the other side. You need two placemats if you are doing this on all 4 sides .
Ready to see the finished look?
We all like to keep our homes beautiful. Home decor doesn’t have to cost a lot. Simple things in your house can change an ordinary thing special , all you need is a creative mind.

I love decorating with placemats too. Whenever I travel abroad it’s the first thing I look for in markets. They make wonderful gifts too. I love that you transformed an endtable using one!
